About the Artist – Richard Young

Although I was a prolific artist as a child and won my first art competition aged just 11, I never thought I would be where I am today. It’s been quite a journey!

Welcome into my World.

Self Portrait. Fine art original oil painting on a 41cm x 51cm canvas created in 2006 using a knife. Original available. Unframed = £330

I am a self-taught, full time professional Artist, born in Yorkshire, in 1961, and now based in Wokingham, Berkshire, UK where I have my gallery, office, workshop and studio.

Though I have always had a flair for art, I graduated in engineering in 1983 and with a passion to travel, I initially pursued a career as an engineering and design consultant, holding various managerial roles with international design consulting companies, residing primarily in the Middle East. Nevertheless, an artisan at heart, I returned to Commercial Art in 2003, initially as a semi-professional artist and then a full time professional in 2018.

My engineering and project management background has certainly helped me in the technical, administrative and organisational aspects of my art practice and there is also a noticeable influence in my composition and creativity.

Art Gallery Opening Ceremony

R Young Art Gallery:

On 30 October 2021, following 3 months of retail fit out, personally decorating until as early as 5am on several occasions, the Mayor and Mayoress of Wokingham officially opened my art gallery. This is undoubtedly the highlight of my career and a lifelong dream.

My engineering experience was useful as I designed, procured and project managed the fit out myself. Phew!

Supported by my partner Sarah and Gallery Manager Louise, we represent up to 20 local and regional artists, stocking a wide range or original art, ltd edition prints, sculptures and ceramics. We also offer fine art scanning, printing, framing, and art class events.

Artist’s Statement:

I have extensively developed my own personal style and technique throughout my career and I create all oil paintings entirely using a knife, often in a limited colour palette and mixing only on the canvas.

I define my artwork style as being contemporary realism and the technique I employ is a form of segmented alla prima, completed in three wet on wet layers during each painting session: The dark shadows and undertones, the mid tones and then the highlights and light glaze effects. For compositions having a high chiaroscuro effect, I complete the underpainting layer in a lean black paint allowing the sweeping knife application textures to remain and effect the main subject in the second layer which transition into the deep shadows in a drybrush technique by scaping back.

My figurative compositions are influenced and inspired by the realism and romanticism of my favourite post renaissance classical Masters and their timeless, romantic masterpieces. William Bouguereau in particular. They predominantly entail high contrast, dramatic lighting and shading, as I simply adore light and am fascinated with its arguably undue influence on any subject. With the subjects, I aim to capture a carefully composed aloof anonymity in a moody atmosphere with the drama, passion and emotion in a frozen realism, rather than characteristic individual representation of a traditional portrait.

I am often asked “why dancers?”, or what’s the theme to your artwork and it’s simple. The theme is PASSION… The dancers, musicians, figurative and even the wildlife artwork share one commonality. PASSION. I have a tremendous passion for everything I do and my artwork in particular. I therefore make every possible effort to capture the passion in the subjects I paint.

I am also extremely analytical and self critique each painting upon completion in a systematic manner, as anyone who has attended an unveiling session in my home and studio will know.

Hey – But tell me what you think!

PS: I am a foodie, I love fine wines, travel, culture, photography, cinema and I have a serious sense of humour!

“The practice of art isn’t to make a living. It’s to make your soul grow.” – Kurt Vonnegut

And in the words of Shakespeare himself: “The excellence of every art is its intensity, capable of making all disagreeables evaporate, from their being in their close relationship with beauty and truth.” As for me, I just love the smell of oil paint in the morning…

Donate a beer or a glass of wine
